Just in time for the special of the year we are welcoming back our old friends from Antigua Guatemala – the Zelaya family and their farm Buena Vista.
This coffee is grown on a beautiful farm boasting a gorgeous view over the old town of Antigua, where this Bourbon variety develops delicious notes of sweet nougat, aromatic candied orange peel, hints of spicy cinnamon, and juicy yellow plums.
The Zelayas were the very first producers we ever visited and one of the very first partners of ours. They have a special meaning to both our company as well as our family and we are really excited to be able to work with them and their coffees again directly. We have been buying their coffees from even before Populus Coffee truly existed.
Soft and clean cup with notes of nougat, candied orange peel, cinnamon, yellow plum
Gentle and (heart)warming espresso with notes of green apple, raisin, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
Sweet and tender. Candied apple, marzipan and lemon zest.
The Zelaya family is a very well-known and established coffee family from Antigua, Guatemala. The coffee trade has been taught, passed on, and developed from generation to generation in their family. The skills and methods have also been shared with the surrounding community in order to bring better farming methods, new knowledge, and therefore better income to everyone around.
Luis Pedro Zelaya is the current generation running this long-term family business. Highly respected and liked both for his knowledge and expertise in the trade but also for his personal qualities he is definitely the kind of partner we are looking for.
The farm, Buena Vista, is still technically owned by Luis Pedro's father, who shares not only the passion for coffee but his name with his son. Buena Vista is a big farm where the Zelayas are cultivating multiple different varieties such as Bourbon and various types of Geisha for example. It is very well managed and constantly rethought farm with new things, whether it be farming methods or new varieties introduced on a regular basis.
