The Producer:
Corazón de Jesús is a highly dedicated micro mill located in Chirripó, within the Pérez Zeledón region in southern Costa Rica. Though it lies near the country’s highest peak, Cerro Chirripó, the area has traditionally been known for commercial coffee production and often overlooked in favor of renowned regions like Tarrazú and the West Valley. That perception, however, is rapidly changing.
This year, Corazón de Jesús firmly established its place on the map by taking home a triple-win from Costa Rica's Cup of Excellence competition. Their coffees placed first and third place in the washed category, as well as first
place in the natural/honey category.
After enjoying their coffee over the past few years, we finally had the chance to visit the farm ourselves in 2024. Coming from Santa María de Dota in the heart of Tarrazú, the drive takes you up the Cerro de la Muerte and across the high plateau before descending into the valley where the Alvarado Fonseca family runs their operation.
The valley is lined with coffee trees on both sides, reaching elevations above 2,000 meters above sea level. Clear mountain streams weave through the landscape, and the surrounding forests are alive with waterfalls and biodiversity. It’s a tranquil, invigorating environment — perfectly suited to cultivating exceptional coffee.
We got along really well, and we ended up staying for an extra night, enjoying their hospitality. We cupped through the lots and visited farms together with Antonio.
We were deeply impressed by the spirit and drive of their family, not to mention the exceptional quality of their coffee.
Founded on November 26th, 2015, Corazón de Jesús has always been a fully family-run project. Parents Jhon and Kathia, along with their children Antonio, Marilyn, Eva, Abraham, and Jhoel, have worked tirelessly to realize their dream of producing world-class coffee. They started from scratch—building everything themselves, from African drying beds to fermentation tanks. Over time, their dedication began to bear fruit, allowing them to explore diverse varieties and experimental processing methods. Today, their own milling station allows them to process small lots with precision, drying each batch on dedicated raised beds to keep varietals and processes clearly separated and closely monitored.
The journey began with a single farm at 1650–1950 meters elevation, which remains their primary source, accounting for about 60% of their annual production. As their success grew, the family expanded with four additional farms: Los Tonos, La Torre, La Cusuca, and Vista Paraíso, where they now cultivate over 20 different varieties of coffee.
2025 marked a milestone year for Corazón de Jesús. At the world-renowned Cup of Excellence, they took first place in both the washed and honey/natural categories, along with a third-place finish in the washed category—a crowning achievement for the family.
This, however, wasn’t their first recognition. In total, their accolades include:
- 1st and 3rd place – Washed Category, Cup of Excellence 2025, Costa Rica
- 1st place – Honeys and Naturals Category, Cup of Excellence 2025, Costa Rica
- 2nd place – Honeys and Naturals Category, Cup of Excellence 2024, Costa Rica
- 3rd and 17th place – Cup of Excellence 2022, Costa Rica
- 5th place – Cup of Excellence 2021, Costa Rica
