The Producer:
We met Arturo and his cousin Benjamin for the first time back in 2014 on our first trip to the origin, which also acted as the spark to start Populus Coffee. In 2015, we contracted our first coffees through their dry mill and coffee exporting company, San Vicente, one of the world’s most highly esteemed sources of specialty coffee. This year, we are celebrating our 10th partnership anniversary.
Arturo is San Vicente’s chief agronomist and cupper. His precise palate and extensive knowledge of coffee agronomy and processing give him an entirely unique perspective on advising and supporting the farmers they work with.
His own farm lies high over 1630 masl on the steep hills of the Santa Barbara mountain range, surrounded by shrouding clouds hanging thick around the deeply green trees. The year-round humidity and slope-specific micro-climates combined with the rich volcanic soil give Santa Barbara area coffees the complex cup profile they are known for and that we fell in love with.
Arturo is focused on producing high-quality coffees and is no stranger to the CoE Honduras winners list. He is not interested in quantity but quality and has divided his farm into smaller plots, each cultivating a different variety and aiming for a unique flavor profile.; Pacas, Pacamara, Bourbon, SL-28, Maragogype, and Geisha.
